What the Word Counter Measures

Words: Typically counted by splitting on whitespace. "Hello world" = 2 words. Hyphenated words may count as one or two depending on the tool—ours uses a standard whitespace split.

Characters: Total characters including spaces. Important for Twitter (280), meta descriptions, and SMS. Character count without spaces is also useful for some platforms.
