Why Knowing Your Internet Speed Matters

Slow browsing, streaming buffering, and video call drops are frustrating. Often the first question is: how fast is my connection really? ISPs advertise "up to" speeds, but actual performance depends on network load, time of day, and your equipment. A speed test gives you concrete numbers: download (how fast you receive data), upload (how fast you send it), ping (latency in milliseconds), and jitter (variation in latency). These metrics matter for streaming (Netflix, YouTube), gaming (low latency is critical), video calls (Zoom, Teams), and remote work. Whether you're verifying your ISP's claims, comparing before and after a router upgrade, or diagnosing connectivity issues, an accurate speed test is the first step. See Network Performance on Wikipedia, M-Lab NDT7, and the MDN Network Information API.

How Our Speed Test Works

Our test uses the M-Lab NDT7 protocol—an open standard used by researchers and regulators worldwide. The test automatically selects the nearest M-Lab server for accurate measurement. It measures download speed (data received) and upload speed (data sent) in Mbps, plus ping and jitter to assess network responsiveness. Results appear in real time during the test. No signup, no app—just accurate measurement in seconds.

Understanding the Results

Download (Mbps): How fast you receive data. Affects streaming, browsing, and file downloads. Higher is better. 25+ Mbps is generally good for HD streaming; 100+ for 4K and multiple devices.

Upload (Mbps): How fast you send data. Affects video calls, cloud backups, and live streaming. Asymmetric connections (e.g., cable) often have much lower upload than download.

Ping (ms): Latency—how long a round-trip takes. Lower is better. Under 50 ms is good for gaming and video calls; over 100 ms can cause lag.

Jitter (ms): Variation in latency. High jitter causes inconsistent quality in video calls and gaming. Lower is better.

Tips for Accurate Results

  • Close other apps that use bandwidth (streaming, downloads, cloud sync)
  • Use a wired connection when possible—Wi-Fi can vary
  • Run multiple tests at different times—speeds fluctuate
  • Compare to your plan—if you're consistently below what you pay for, contact your ISP

FAQ

  • What is internet speed?

Internet speed measures how fast data travels between your device and the internet. It's typically expressed in Mbps (megabits per second) for download and upload, and in milliseconds (ms) for latency (ping) and jitter.

  • Is the speed test free?

Yes. The speed test is 100% free and requires no signup. It uses the globally trusted M-Lab NDT7 protocol for accurate measurement.

  • What does the test measure?

It measures download speed (Mbps), upload speed (Mbps), ping (ms), and jitter. Results are accurate and displayed in real time during the test.

  • Why do results differ from my ISP's claim?

Results depend on network load, time of day, and connected devices. Our test measures actual application-level speed. Close other apps for more accurate results.

  • Is my data saved?

No. The test runs in your browser and we do not store your results. M-Lab may collect anonymized data for research—see our privacy policy.
